Every music that has a ‘post’ attached to it’s genre does not bake your head with non-sense. It wasn’t too long ago when I woke up to post-rock music only to be forced to shut-up and concentrate more. Being a very sensitive and sensible side of the music world, bands that play post music choose to outplay their own understanding. Case in point is the post-black metal band Hypomanie and their new album A City in Mono. Fine, they are ordinary black metal but yes they have a post element filling all their tracks which is like an enhancement.
On A City in Mono the band confuses you with their way of tackling happiness and depression. One moment you are smiling, the other you don’t know how to react and on another you are dull. A similar looking graph must have come your way if you have heard any good depressive black metal band but the layers and textures here have a slightly different story to tell. And that is where the catch lies. Production-wise A City in Mono is far from weak although the drums on all the songs are sounding less in comparison to rest of the gear. The shades on the front cover work in favor of the album.
Hypomanie is not some kind of a musical brilliance or anything but I’d say you haven’t heard post-black metal because you don’t know it exists. Rest is open for you to understand.
